My goal is to use this blog spot instead of a newsletter. I hope to update it frequently to keep you informed about classroom and school happenings. Feel free to comment or ask questions however, remember this is a public blog.
We have spent the first month reaquainting ourselves with old friends and classroom procedures.
In math we have been reviewing place value of numbers to 1 million, rounding and estimating. We will spend a few days reviewing addition and subtraction of large numbers.
In ELA, we have been learning to use the new Journeys materials. Our weekly spelling words are from this series and students have nightly homework to practice the words (the TicTacToe sheet). We are also writing narrative fiction stories. We have read a selection of Because of Winn Dixie and My Brother Martin.
In science, we are reviewing the importance of plants. We are sprouting lima bean seeds. Students will use the bean plants to conduct an experiment.
Social Studies has us reviewing map skills. We also looked at the landforms of New Yorks State. We learned about 2 landforms that I had never even heard of- drumlins and moraines. We will create a salt and flour map of New York's topography this week.
Notes: Picture Day- October 1st.
PTA meeting- October 2nd
Parent Math night- October 2nd
