Time is surely flying! This past week we finished up our geography study of NYS. We will have a quiz on Tuesday, October 14th. Review materials and the salt and flour map were sent home last week. We will begin NYS history with some explorers next week (Hudson, Cabot, Champlain). In science we will be wrapping up our plant studies with photosynthesis. Some of our Lima beans have really taken off and we have re-started seeds for those which did not grow.
In math, Ms. Fox and I decided to skip the short unit on metric measurement until later in the year and forge ahead with multiplication and division. We will be reviewing and practicing different methods of multiplying (you surely remember lattice multiplication from last year). Students will be asked to practice each of these methods but in the end, they will need to choose a strategy that gets them a correct answer most consistently. Memorizing the facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) is key to not becoming frustrated while doing this unit. PLEASE, PLEASE practice those facts at home! I cannot stress the value of this!
We are still smoothing out the schedule for our Journeys ELA activities. We will continue to work with the materials and stories. The writing continues to be in the narrative style and I hope to get some stories posted soon. There will not be spelling words this week due to the 4 day week. We will also venture down to the computer lab on Thurs. and Fri. to re-familiarize ourselves with the Big Universe program.
Dates to Remember:
October 22nd- Family Science Night 5:30-7:30
October 23rd- Field trip to Huyck Preserve- dress for the weather and bring a bag lunch
October 24th- PTA Halloween Bash
Have a great week!
