We have started 2015 off with a bang with weather delays and snow days! I apologize for the delay in updates- the district has switched our email provider (my email address has not changed however) and it has taken a bit of time to switch my email contacts to the new provider.
We are learning Spanish! It has always been a dream of mine to include Spanish language instruction in my classroom. This is the year it finally happens! We will go slow however as it has been many, many years since I have used the language! I did spend a semester of college living in Spain and have a certification to teach it- but am very rusty! I think we will have fun learning together. We will spend about 10-15 minutes at the end of each day learning Spanish words and will then try to incorporate the words into our school day. So far we have been practicing the alphabet and some common phrases.
In math we continue with fractions. We will spend several more weeks on this topic. We have been learning about equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and will begin adding and subtracting fractions. In addition to learning the mathematical algorithm to find common denominators and compare fractions, students are using number lines and tape diagrams to represent their work. In addition to fractions, we continue to practice math facts daily. Please consider allowing your child to go onto one of the many math sites to practice their facts (if internet is available).
Light energy has been our focus in science. We conducted and experiment to prove that light travels in a straight line and will explore reflection and refraction this week.
In social studies we will continue our trip through history with the English Colonies and Revolutionary War. Students will be researching a historical figure from this time and writing a biographical sketch.
Supplies Needed: Our community snack supply has dwindled! If your child frequently shares our community snack, please contribute to our supply (pretzels, animal crackers, goldfish type crackers, granola bars, etc).
We are also running low on tissues, #2 pencils and black dry erase markers. Please consider picking up some extra supplies if possible.
Thanks as always for you support!!
