September sure has flown by! We have settled into a great routine here in Room 102! In ELA we are using a center based model for our reading groups- students meet with a teacher for small group reading, work on spelling activities, and read books independently that they have selected. Be sure to ask your child what they are currently reading and if they have taken a "Book Selfie" yet. We have also begun a writing unit on personal narrative writing. Students chose a watermelon idea or small moment from their life and then narrowed it down to a seed idea to write about. We are focusing on using descriptive language- trying to show the reader the story through words and not just tell the story.
Students have been able to use the computer lab to work on typing skills. We are using a free on-line program called "Learn to Type- Big Brown Bear."
In science we finished up a unit on how rocks are formed- I sent a separate email with information on that unit. In a few weeks we will do a short plant unit, again using the Mystery Science website.
In social studies we have been reviewing map skills and land forms. This week we made a salt dough map of NYS which will be painted and labeled and brought home next week. We will do a short study of early NYS explorers next.
We have finished up place value and rounding in math. The children took a chapter test on Thursday- check folders for a small slip with your child's score. Next up is adding and subtracting larger numbers. Be sure to have your child practice multiplication facts at home. We take a daily timed fact test- your child can tell you what their "bubble number" is on the fact test. That number is the set of facts he/she is being tested on.
Be sure to take a peek at Miss Fox's blog on this site for an update!
Have a great weekend!
